How can i strip paint off of metal?

I am restoring a 1944 Farmall H tractor and am stripping all the paint off and redoing it. I have been wire-wheeling it with the grinder but i am going through wire-wheels fast and they are expensive. i have heard of power sanding but i am worried that it will scratch the base metal and leave pits that will show through the paint. Also heard of chemical strippers but takes alot of money to and takes a long time to do it.

Don’t bother using a grinder or sander on your Farmall. Get yourself a gallon can of Stripeeze. Price is $20 to $30. Use a couple cheap non plastic 2 inch paint brushes. Paint it on and leave it sit about 3 to 5 minutes. Then use a 2 – 3 inch scrapper, plastic or metal, and the paint will roll off. This project will explain itself to you as you get into it. It’s faster than you think. All the sheet metal can be stripped in 4 to 8 hours of work, straight or spread out. The metal won’t be hurt. I’ve done it on 3 tractors. Also get some mid and finer grade good steel wool pads and a few rags for final finishing. Not Brillo though. Fkor the repaint be sure you get the original Farmall red from a farm supply – not auto. The auto paint doesn’t match on comparison with the original. Spray the sheet metal – you can brush on the wheels, etc. Don’t do it in mid-day direct sun and try to do the job in an area where you can make a mess without damaging anything. Good Luck.
